SPIRIT NOVA SCOTIA
LOCAL FOOD AWARD 2010

The vision of the Local Food Team of Spirit NS…

In our vision, Nova Scotia has rich top soil, clean air and water, resilient farm and
fishing communities, and healthy, local food for all citizens. We engage and inspire all
Nova Scotians to celebrate and protect this inheritance for future generations.
The 3rd Annual Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Award, co-sponsored by Spirit Nova Scotia and Select Nova Scotia, will celebrate individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the local food movement in Nova Scotia.

Award categories: Prizes will be awarded for three categories:
- Producer (farmer/fisher)
- Non-profit (organizations, institutions, individuals etc.)
- Business (restaurants, retail, etc.)
Criteria for award: Nominees will be evaluated on achievements in the following areas:
A. Environmental Stewardship:
Steps taken to reduce fossil fuel dependency
Recycling and waste reduction practices
Stewardship practices
B. Community Engagement:
Contributions to community
Partnerships with other organizations
C. Promotion of Local Food:
Marketing strategies pertaining to local foods generated by the applicant
Public education efforts by the applicant
D. Creativity and Innovation:
Reaching new audiences with the local foods message
Offering services/products to the local community
Nominations must be e-mailed by July 9, 2010. A panel of judges will create a short list of nominees for each category. The general public will be invited to vote for winners in each category (via www.selectnovascotia.ca website) from August 2-16, 2010.

Award Announcement: Winners will be announced in at the IncreEdible Picnic on August 22, 2010 in Halifax.

Producer: Oulton’s Family Farm
Business: Tempest
