Sustainability

STS Eco-Seal Levels

STS Strivers…

• demonstrate genuine commitment and progress toward embracing and implementing environmental/social sustainability practices. The striver level is the entry level recognition and is earned by accruing five Greenpoints and at least two badges.

STS Achievers…

• demonstrate significant integration of environmental and social sustainability practices throughout the organization. The gold level is earned by accruing ten Greenpoints and at least four badges.

STS Champions…

• demonstrate comprehensive integration and cultural adoption of sustainable best practices throughout the organization. The green level is reserved for market-leading organizations that have accrued 15 Greenpoints and 7 or more badges. This achievement level recognizes companies that have demonstrated best practices among their peer organizations and market sector.

The Striving Towards Sustainability (STS) Program is a revolutionary tool for small- to-medium-sized membership organizations, consulting firms and other groups dedicated to local living economies and the triple bottom line. The STS Program provides assistance in adopting new green business practices and is a vehicle for marketing Sustainability efforts to increasingly eco-conscious consumers.

This program’s objective is to provide educational assistance, recognize achievements, and create a vibrant network of businesses that are on a sustainable path. The truly sustainable path is inclusive of the “triple bottom line” philosophy of people, planet and profit. It includes a business plan built upon equitable labour practices, ethical profits, and responsible use of natural resources. We recognize that making a business more sustainable takes commitment, vision and at times, resources. Thus, the STS Program is intended to provide important education for communities and serve as a strong marketing tool for businesses as they begin to move towards true sustainability.

The STS Program introduces sustainable business practices, assists in both the development of priorities and in the selection and implementation of projects and identifies barriers to sustainability. Workshop participants can earn the recognition levels of “Strivers,” “Achievers,” or the highest sustainability recognition of “Champions.” Participants earn “Greenpoints” for attending the workshop, attending local lectures (or viewing STS lectures online), attending local network trainings, BALLE functions, making commitments to sustainable changes, calculating carbon footprint and more. Additional Greenpoints are earned by achievement in nine badge categories:  management, purchasing, energy, transportation, waste, facilities, employees, customers, or community.

What is BALLE?

BALLE stands for Business Alliance for Local Living Economies.
It is an international movement in which local, independently-owned businesses are working together to build sustainable and vibrant communities.

Why is BALLE the fastest growing business movement in North America?
Because the time for dynamic local economies is right now! We believe in the power of local independent businesses to transform communities, build local self-reliance, align commerce with the common good, and bring transparency, accountability, and a caring human face to the marketplace.
